Fire and intruder systems need periodic servicing to remain compliant and insurable. Choose the cover that matches your property and risk. Existing systems by other installers welcome.
Is my telecare or pendant alarm affected by the UK phone line switch-off?
Possibly, yes. The UK's old analogue phone network is being retired, with a final switch-off date of January 2027. Any pendant alarm or telecare unit still connected through an old landline will stop working once that happens. Digital, SIM-connected alternatives don't rely on a phone line at all, so they're unaffected. If you're not sure what your current system uses, we can check for you.
Do you charge for the site survey or quotation?
No. Site surveys and written quotations are free of charge and carry no obligation. We visit, assess the property and your requirements, and you receive a clear itemised quotation to consider in your own time.
How does your pricing work?
Every quotation follows a site survey, so the price reflects your actual property rather than a guess. Quotes are fixed and itemised — equipment, labour and any certification clearly broken down, with no hidden extras.
How quickly do you respond, and when can work start?
Phone and WhatsApp are answered during opening hours, Monday to Saturday 08:00–18:00; messages sent outside those hours are picked up the next working day. Survey and installation dates are arranged around your schedule, and urgent faults on existing systems are prioritised.
What cable do you use, and why does it matter?
For IP cameras, access control and networking we use Cat6 or Cat6A as the installation demands, run in proper containment and terminated to BS EN 50173. Cat6A gives headroom for higher-bandwidth cameras and longer PoE runs. Fire alarm circuits use fire-rated cable appropriate to the system category. Cheap cable and poor termination are the most common cause of the intermittent faults we get called to fix.
How far can a PoE camera run from the switch?
The Ethernet standard allows 100 m of channel length including patch leads — around 90 m of fixed cable. Beyond that we design in a mid-span switch, fibre link or PoE extender rather than pushing the limit, because marginal runs drop out as soon as the camera's IR illuminators pull more current at night.
Is a wireless alarm as secure as a wired one?
A properly graded wireless system is. Ajax uses the Jeweller protocol on the 868 MHz band with AES-128 encryption, frequency hopping and continuous tamper/jamming monitoring, certified to . Where a risk assessment or insurer requires Grade 3, we design accordingly. Wireless also means far less disruption in an occupied property.
What does BS 5839 mean for my fire alarm?
BS 5839-1 is the code of practice for fire detection in commercial premises; Part 6 covers dwellings. It governs system category (L1–L5, or P1/P2 for property protection), detector spacing, sound levels, cause-and-effect, standby battery capacity and servicing. Commercial systems typically need servicing every six months to remain compliant.
What's the difference between L1, L2, L3, L4, L5 and P1/P2 fire alarm categories?
These are the system categories defined in BS 5839-1 (commercial) and BS 5839-6 (domestic) — they describe what a system is designed to protect, not a brand or product. L1 gives the most extensive coverage, with detection throughout virtually the whole building, and is used for higher-risk premises; L2, L3 and L4 provide progressively less coverage, ranging down to protecting escape routes only; L5 is a bespoke category designed around a specific, identified risk rather than a standard layout. P1 and P2 are separate categories aimed at protecting property rather than life safety — P1 covers the whole building, P2 covers specific higher-value areas. Which category is appropriate depends on the building's use, occupancy and a proper fire risk assessment, and is confirmed during a professional site survey rather than assumed in advance.
What's the difference between a conventional and an addressable fire alarm system?
In a conventional fire alarm system, detectors and call points are wired in circuits covering a zone — such as a floor or a section of a building — so when the panel receives an alarm it tells you which zone triggered it, not the exact device. In an addressable fire alarm system, every detector and call point has its own unique identity on the system, so the panel can identify the exact device that triggered the alarm. Addressable systems generally suit larger or more complex buildings where pinpointing the exact location saves time; conventional systems can be entirely appropriate for smaller, simpler premises. Which is right for a given property depends on its size, layout and use, and is part of what a site survey and system design establish.
Do I have legal obligations if I install CCTV?
If cameras capture anywhere beyond your own boundary, you become a data controller under UK GDPR and the DPA 2018 — meaning clear signage, a justified retention period, restricted access to footage and a process for subject access requests. We set retention correctly at commissioning and document it; the ICO publishes guidance for domestic and commercial use.
Will smart switches work if the internet drops?
Yes. Our touch switches operate locally at the wall regardless of internet status — physical touch control always works. You only lose remote app access and voice control during an outage, and both restore automatically when connectivity returns.
Can you integrate with equipment already on site?
Often, yes. ONVIF-compliant cameras will usually record to a new NVR, existing Cat6 can be re-tested and reused, and many fire and intruder panels can be expanded rather than replaced. We assess what's there during the survey and tell you honestly what's worth keeping.
What documentation do I receive on completion?
Depending on the works: electrical installation or minor works certificates, test results, fire alarm design and commissioning certificates, as-fitted drawings and device schedules, a system logbook, O&M information and handover training for whoever operates the system.
